Admissions

Admission requirements

General Admission requirements for all prospective students:

  • The applicant has a high school diploma, GED certificate, or 2-year degree or higher from a nationally accredited college OR
  • The applicant, who has neither a high school diploma nor a GED certificate demonstrates potential for being a successful college student, at teh discretion of the college. This may require that you take a placement exam. Finanical Aid may or may not be available for students without a high school diploma or GED.

Applying to South Central College is an easy 2-step process:  

  1. Visit www.southcentral.edu/admissions to complete our Onine Application.
     
  2. Send your transcripts to South Central College:
    - Your official high school transcript or official GED transcript
    - An official transcript ofr any colleges you have attended (including as a PSEO or Concurrent Enrollment student)

Once you are admitted, your next 3 steps are:

  1. Placement Exam - You may possibly need to take one or more accuplacer exams to qualify for certain courses.
     
  2. Advising and Registratoin Session - This is your opportunity to register for classes, get details on your academic program and learn more about South Central College.
     
  3. Welcome Orientation - At this event you will prepare for your first semester by getting your student ID, books, parking permit, as well as meeting SCC staff, faculty, and other new students.

Paying for College with Financial Aid

Financial aid is money to help students pay for the educational expenses at a postsecondary school. Financial aid is a supplement after your and your families resources are used. Some types of financial aid need to be repaid and others do not:

  • Grants are financial aid funds that Do Not have to be repaid. Grant eligibility is generally based on your financial need.
     
  • Loans are financial aid funds that you Do have to repay with a low interest rate. There are limits on teh maximum amount you are eligible to receive each academic year. Students must be enrolled at least part-time (6 credits or more) to qualify each semester.
     
  • Work-Study is an hourly wage earned thorugh a job on campus while attending school that Does Not have to be repaid. The hours you may work depends upon your financial need, class schedule and your particular job. Students must be enrolled at least part-time (6 credits or more) to qualify each semester.
     

Applying for Financial Aid

To apply for financial aid, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for every academic year you will attend, following these steps:

  • Acces the FAFSA at www.fafsa.gov
  • Enter 005537 for SCC's school code.
  • Check your eServices account for informatoin regarding your financial aid file.
  • Submit additional documents to teh college, if requested.
  • Review our financial aid award information through your eServices account.
  • Accept your loan eligibility if you determine you need a college loan. Since loan money is paid back, with interest, you get ot decide if and how much you would like to borrow each semester.
     

Other Financial Assistance Available

Scholarships are a type of gift aid that Does Not need to be repaid. Thanks to teh generosity of area businesses, organizations, community members and SCC employees, our Foundations are able to award more than $350,000 in scholarships to qualifying students each year. For details and an application, visit www.southcentral.edu/scholarships. The deadline is in March each year to be considered for the following academic year.

There are also other scholarship opportunities you may wish to pursue from other organizations, including professional associations, your employer or your parents' employers, your church or community group, local businesses, civic groups or your high school.
