January 31, 2008Minnesota State Colleges and Universities to hold public hearings on proposed state career and technical education planContact: Melinda Voss, (651) 296-9443, melinda.voss@so.mnscu.edu The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system will host a series of public hearings in February on a proposed five-year plan for Minnesota's career and technical education programs, which serve about 180,000 high school students and 280,000 students in college credit and non credit programs. The proposed state plan addresses how the funds provided to Minnesota under the federal Carl D. Perkins Act of 2006 will advance career and technical education in Minnesota high schools and state colleges. The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system is the state agency designated by the U. S. Department of Education to develop and administer the plan. The proposed plan will be available on the Web site www.perkinsplan.project.mnscu.edu by Feb. 1. Members of the public also may send comments through that Web site. The hearings will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the following locations: (updated campus locations Feb. 1, 2008)Feb. 7, Northwest Technical College, Bemidji - Community Commons A satellite broadcast hearing will be Feb. 20 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, call 651-296-3906. The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees is expected to act on the new plan at its March meeting. Each state must submit its plan to the U.S. Department of Education by April 1. The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system comprises 32 state universities, community colleges, technical colleges and combined community and technical colleges located on 53 campuses across the state. The system serves approximately 242,500 students annually in credit-based courses and another 140,000 in non-credit courses. |
