Choate represents the Central Region on the association's 26-member
board and also serves on its Public Policy Committee. Choate was
reappointed to the board by Chair David Rutledge for a one-year
term expiring at the association's annual convention in October
2004.
"Mary has demonstrated an in-depth knowledge of board governance
issues related to community colleges," said Rutledge, a trustee
at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Mich. "I believe that
she will be an asset to the ACCT Board of Directors as we develop
policies that will focus on helping our members develop excellence
in trusteeship."
The Association of Community College Trustees is a nonprofit educational
organization of governing boards, representing more than 6,500 elected
and appointed trustees who govern 1,200 community, technical and
junior colleges in the United States, Canada and England. The association
offers trustee training and professional development, educational
programs, research and publications, board services and public policy
advocacy.
"It is a great honor to represent the state of Minnesota on this
board," Choate said. "I am very proud of the community colleges
in our system and the role they play in the economic vitality of
our communities."
Choate, a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities
Board of Trustees since 1998, served as its chair from July 2001
through July 2003 and chair of its Audit Committee.
"Choate's reappointment to the Association of Community College
Trustees Board of Directors reflects her excellent leadership style
of collaboration and consensus building as chair of the Board of
Trustees of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System
for the past two years," said Jim A. Luoma, current chair of the
Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees. "We
are very proud of her appointment to this distinguished national
association."
Choate is a graduate of St. Cloud State University. She and her
husband, David Choate, own and operate eight McDonald's restaurants
in the Twin Cities area, and she serves as secretary/treasurer for
the business. Choate formerly was a stockbroker with Piper Jaffray,
E.F. Hutton and Norwest Investment Services.
The mission of the Association of Community College Trustees is
promoting effective board governance through advocacy and education.
The organization helps community college boards lead their institutions
by providing trustee education, informing decision-makers about
the national community college system, gathering and providing information
that trustees need to make policy decisions on behalf of their communities,
and ensuring that community college boards remain accountable to
their constituencies through informed decision-making.
