Mesabi Range Community and Technical College is the new name for the recent consolidation of Range Technical College, Eveleth, and Mesabi Community College, Virginia.
The name was approved unanimously on Wednesday, August 7, by the Board of Trustees of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) during a meeting in St. Paul.
The two colleges consolidated to form a single higher education institution on July 1, using existing campuses.
The new name was recommended by a New College Name Committee that sought advice from the campus communities and from the general public in the region. Ballots were printed in area newspapers, and the public was invited to vote on suggested names.
The consolidated college is a member institution of MnSCU, a system of community colleges, technical colleges and state universities serving more than 151,000 students at 38 institutions in 46 communities around the state.
Minnesota's 31 state community and technical colleges, and universities serve more than 430,000 students across the state.
