This 80-hour nursing assistant course is designed to meet the Minnesota Department of Health standards. The Minnesota State Board of Vocational Technical Education Curriculum is utilized for teaching community skills, residents' rights, rehabilitation, basic person care, vital signs, psychosocial needs, etc. Upon satisfactory completion of classroom/lab instruction and clinical experience, the student qualifies to take the competency exam. This exam is required by federal legislation (OBRA) for the employment of nursing assistants in long term care facilities. In addition, this course is intended to prepare students for practice at the nursing assistant level and also serve as an introduction to the nursing sequence for students who continue beyond Level I. A grade point average of 2.0 or better is required for a certificate of completion and admittance into the level II Practical Nursing Program.
