Students are trained to work with physicians, nurses, lab technicians, x-ray personnel, and lay professionals in creating medical records and examining them for completeness. They also maintain file systems including proper procedures for release of health information, gather statistics for research purposes, and possibly supervise a medical records team. Students are able to work anywhere a medical record is generated - hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, government agencies, insurance companies, etc. Students will be required to complete two (2) on-the-job internships (practicums) while enrolled. Coursework includes working with computers and file systems. After completing the program, students will be able to write the National Certification Examination from the American Health Information Management Association and, if successful, become Accredited Record Technicians (ART).
