The program is designed to prepare students for employment as medical secretaries. Medical secretaries provide administrative support in order to keep health organizations running smoothly. The medical secretary combines an interest in the medical field with strong clerical skills. Persons in this position need to know medical terminology in order to transcribe medical dictation, prepare correspondence, maintain medical records and charts, and assist physicians or medical scientists with reports, speeches, and articles. Besides medical terminology, knowledge of hospital reports, clinical procedures, and laboratory procedures is needed. Medical secretaries must sustain a consistent level of interest and dedication because their work directly relates to their client's well-being. The medical secretary may perform some of the duties usually performed by the medical administrative assistant. Some possible career sites are: private clinics, group practices, hospitals, nursing homes, therapy centers, research institutions, public health institutions, and insurance companies.
