This program prepares students to work with all phases of plumbing and heating including such things as drainage systems, fixtures, hot-cold water distribution, blueprint reading, estimating, and the plumbing code. There is also extensive training in heating and sheet metal. Much of the training in this major involves shop work and actual hands-on experience. Plumbers install and repair pipe systems which carry water, steam, air or other liquids and gases needed for sanitation and industrial production. Most plumbers specialize in either residential or commercial installations. They must see a variety of hand and machine-tool skills and develop systems according to local codes and specifications.
