About this Program

The Early Childhood Special Education program at Southwest Minnesota State University is designed to prepare candidates to work with infants, toddlers, and young children with special needs from birth to age 6. This program covers the physical, emotional/social, motor, cognitive, communication, and problem-solving domains of development. Candidates will learn how to work with infants and toddlers in a home-based environment as early interventionists. Candidates will also develop skills to conduct a center-based program for pre-school age children with special needs. Finally, candidates will learn to be school age interventionists in an inclusive kindergarten/1st grade setting. This program is designed as a stand-alone degree requiring 120 credits for graduation, which includes preparation for licensure in Early Childhood Special Education.
