This program is designed to prepare students with reading, comprehension and writing skills. It includes the study of English and American literature, creative and expository writing, linguistics, criticism, and communication and theater arts. Common courses include world literature, American/British literature, selected authors, the novel, English/American drama, linguistics and literary criticism. Prospective secondary (grades 7-12) teachers who plan to teach English more than 1/2 time fulfill coursework requirements for a State of Minnesota licensure to teach English up to full-time by completing a sequence in professional education courses that emphasize methods of teaching English and student teaching Students complete coursework in English and American literature, poetry and/or drama, and professional education. The Master of Arts program in English is for students who wish a concentration in the English discipline. The Master of Science program in English is for English teachers who wish to broaden their academic and professional credentials. An undergraduate teaching degree is required.
