Thomas Renier served as the President of the Northland Foundation from when the organization was founded in 1986 until December 2014. One of the six Minnesota Initiative Foundations, the Northland Foundation is a regional foundation serving the communities of northeastern Minnesota. The Foundation provides grants to nonprofit organizations, loans to for-profit businesses, and a variety of programs that serve children, youth, and families. It also owns and operates three assisted living facilities in rural communities. Prior to joining the Foundation, he was with the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission, working primarily in economic development. In 1985, he formed the Northspan Group, a nonprofit business and economic development organization.

Renier is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Duluth, and a lifelong resident of that city. A resident of the 8th Congressional District, Renier was first appointed to the Board of Trustees by Governor Tim Pawlenty in 2004. He was reappointed by Governor Pawlenty in 2010 for a six-year term ending June 30, 2016.
