Tips for parents and mentors
-
Talk about college with your student and why it's smart to continue education after high school.
- Ask what's important to your student in choosing a college or university and what careers seem interesting.
- Encourage your student to look at campus Web sites and to request information.
- Help schedule campus visits. Go when classes are in session, if possible, so you can meet students and faculty, and see typical campus life.
- Ask about student services and other ways the campus supports student access.
- Find out about financial aid to to help reduce the costs. Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA form, as soon as possible after Jan. 1 in 12th grade. See www.fafsa.ed.gov.
- Don't hover. It's best for your student to take the lead in making these important plans for the future.
- Have fun together! You'll be a great coach.
